GOLDEN ANGEL   by Steph Partington

"Marty" Jeff objected trying to be reasonable in the face of Marty's excitement. "We have not had a case for ages and you want to blow a good wedge of the pay packet on a meal?"
Marty paused in the doorway of the restaurant where he had made a reservation, "Oh come on we have had nothing decent to eat for ages. Please it's time we had some fun" Marty sank to his knees in front of Jeff holding his hands up in prayer. "Please" he drew out the word and fluttered his eyelashes at Jeff, Jeff for his part started to flush red as he realised several people in the restaurant were looking at the two of them.
"Alright, just get up" he snarled through gritted teeth. Marty grinned and did so knowing he had got his own way.
"Can I help you?" a condescending voice asked. Marty swung round to face the maitre d'.
"You can indeed" he announced in a loud voice and parodying the man's voice, "We have a reservation under the name Hopkirk" The man consulted his book and looked very disgruntled to find that exact reservation, "Follow me" "I'd be delighted" Marty told him grinning. Jeff hit him in the back, Marty glanced at him and pouted, Jeff attempted a scowl but it came out more of a smile. They sat down and started to read the menu, they were both silent for a while then Jeff unable to hold himself back broke the silence,
"Could you just behave?" he looked over the menu at Marty. Marty looked back innocently, as the waitress arrived Jeff ended his plea, "Just for me, please"

Jeannie Hurst for her part had been rather distracted and amused by the sight of the tall, dark and good looking man drop to his knees in front of the man he was with. The fact that he did not seem embarrassed in the slightest amused her and it was the first time she had ever seen her boss at a loss as to what to do. Half her mind decided that they must be lovers. That was one thing that would really put her boss off his stride. She managed to pull her face together as he walked over to her,
"That's your table, don't cause any trouble" he told her. As he walked off Jeannie pulled her tongue out at his retreating back as discreetly at possible, no one else saw it but it gave her a good deal of satisfaction. She pulled her face together and walked over to the table,
"Just for me please" she caught the tail end of the conversation and realised there was something intimate going on between the pair of them. She looked rather studiously at her pad before looking up at the dark haired man, "Can I get you some drinks?" she asked.

Jeff's breath was taken away from him as he looked up at the waitress. She drawled out the line as if she had done it a million times before and as if the answers had never gotten any better over time.
He saw Marty look up, the expression on his face showed his intent he was about to give a smart answer. As he looked up however something seemed to happen to him. His eyes connected with the girl's. Marty gave a visible start and his blue eyes widened with wonder, whatever the answer he was about to give was totally lost. He looked up at her and stayed there his mouth gaping open. Jeff watched the girl see his reaction and she started to colour, she pushed a loose tendril of hair that was not all that loose behind her ear and she smiled shyly. She was clearly used to reactions from men but nothing like she was getting now. Jeff finally broke the silence,
"Do you think I could hire you on a full time basis?" he asked. As she looked at him he was treated to a full-blown glare.
"Why?" there was a very hard edge to her voice, she clearly thought it was a come on, so did Marty- he was glaring at Jeff as well. Jeff kept the smile on his face he couldn't help it,
"Well, you are the first person to ever make him entirely speechless." Jeff told her. As he spoke the girl grinned widely,
"If he looks at me like that every time, I'll do it for free." She said grinning, "So drinks?" she asked again, holding her pen ready in an exaggerated gesture. Marty looked at Jeff, "I want to marry this woman" he told his best friend.

Marty paid the bill with a flourish telling Jeannie, they had finally extracted her name from her, they were infamous private detectives. She cracked back she was a infamous waitress and walked off with the business credit card,
"You're gonna get that thing cut up soon" Jeff warned him, Marty smiled back he was on too much of a high,
"It was worth it to meet her,"
The conversation was broken up by her coming back she looked a little wild-eyed, "I should tell the manager, he'd cut this up," she handed back the card. Jeff sighed and pulled put his own card and handed it to her, she smiled and dashed away before anyone could spot her.
"I want that money back" Jeff told Marty, knowing straight away that was impossible.
"Trust me," Marty said, 'no damn chance' Jeff thought to himself. As they aimed to leave they saw her slowly tidying up; the maitre d' was still glaring at them they had overstayed their welcome, they both shuffled to the exit. Marty was seriously dragging his feet, he kept glancing back. As they reached the doorway Marty started,
"I'll be right back" he told Jeff. Jeff watched sadly as he raced back over to Jeannie.
Jeannie jumped a mile as Marty appeared from nowhere and grabbed her hand. He raised it to his lips, she fought him slightly; as she tensed he looked up at her face and looked her very intently in the eyes,
"The world is changed because you are made of ivory and gold. The curves of your lips rewrite history" he told her and kissed her on the hand.
She smiled indulgently, "Oscar Wilde" she stated.
Marty's face dropped slightly, "What?"
"Oscar Wilde 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' it's where that quote came from" she told him. She smiled to take the edge of her words. Marty seeing the indulgence in her brown eyes carried on,
"It doesn't stop it being true my Golden Angel" he smiled at her brightly and she giggled, "Can I have your phone number?" he asked pressing his advantage. Five minutes later he bounded back over to Jeff waving a bit of paper, "I got her number" he stated proudly. Jeff's heart sank he wished he found it as easy with women, he was still smarting over his fiancée leaving him and that was nearly four years ago.
"Good for you" Jeff said smiling sadly, "I hope you call her she was nice" Marty wrapped an arm around Jeff's neck and propelled him out into the street, "I'll tell you something Jeff, I'm going to marry that girl"
